DHL Stormers scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage may soon be joining the South African foreign legion earning a living by playing rugby in France.

Western Province Rugby has confirmed that they have received an offer from a French club to sign Duvenage, and an early release from his contract has been requested.

WP have not stood in the way of players lured overseas in the past, and it doesn’t look likely they will do so in this instance either, although Rob Wagner, the WP Rugby CEO, says they are considering the offer and haven’t made a decision.

“We have been approached about Dewaldt, and are aware of an offer that has been made to him, but he is still under contract and has not been released by us (as of yet),” said Wagner in a media statement released on Sunday night.

“However, WP Rugby will not stand in Dewaldt’s way and we are considering the offer and the request to give him an early release from his contract should he wish to play for a foreign club, dependent on terms and conditions being met.”

Duvenage, who turns 25 next month, has played 61 matches for the DHL Stormers but after being the recognised first-choice scrumhalf for the past few seasons, this year he has been part of a rotation policy implemented by Allister Coetzee for the halfbacks.

Nic Groom and Louis Schreuder are two young scrumhalves highly rated by the Stormers' management, though Duvenage seems to be the player best equipped to execute a kicking game when that is required.
